Feminist Gambling

Feminist Gambling

Are you in search of a quotation that involves both feminist activism and the world of gambling? You are in luck, because here's one of them.

"Someone asked me why women don't gamble as much as men do, and I gave the commonsensical reply that we don't have as much money. That was a true and incomplete answer. In fact, women's total instinct for gambling is satisfied by marriage." - from Gloria Steinem

Gloria Steinem is a much respected activist and feminist. She founded the Ms. Magazine, which tackles relevant issues of women. In America, most people regard her as the most influential fighter for women's rights. Her stand on feminism is clearly evident in the quotation found above, and it shall be analyzed further.

First, women really don't have as much money as men do. Why? Women are not given, up to now, equal career opportunities. Some companies still discriminate women and give them lower salary, they even offer some jobs to men only, even if a woman can do the same thing. We all know that money is very vital to gambling. If you only have small money, of course you will just win small. You need a larger capital to win bigger in gambling.

It is a known fact that there are more single moms than single dads, that, children born out of wed lock are often left in the mother's care. They are left to worry about the child's medical care, food and clothing, and often times, the fathers do not give them anything at all.

This means that it leaves the single moms little extra money for gambling, while the fathers can go and splurge their money on everything they want, like gambling. Another fact would be that mothers are known better to give their all to their kids instead of themselves, they even forget to buy themselves things that they need just to be able to give their kids some luxuries in life.

Men are more known to be self-centered, even if they have kids. Some cultures even require women to leave their jobs once they had kids, to be able to take care of them. What money these women will have will be coming from their husbands only. They do not earn their own income, so they do not have money for gambling.

The next point that Steinem raises in this quotation on women and gambling is that women do not need to go to casino to experience the feeling of gambling. They have been gambling all throughout their married life. Is not the decision of getting married considered gambling? Is having a child not gambling? Is giving up your career to take care of kids not gambling?
